Location
Located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Stephens City is the second oldest incorporated municipality in the state. It was founded in the 1730s by German Protestants from Heidelberg. In October 1758, Lewis Stephens chartered Stephens City as the governmental center for Frederick County, Virginia. The city is about 5 miles (8 km) north of Winchester, the state capital, and about 10 miles (16 km) south of the Potomac River. In 2018, the population of Stephens City was estimated at 2,041. In the summer months, average temperatures are in the lower 30s degC and the upper 60s degF. The combination of heat and humidity can produce tornadoes and frequent thunderstorms.
Public schools are operated by the Frederick County Public Schools system. In addition to schools within the town limits, there are local private schools available outside of the city.
