The Lorano Carter Kanab area is located in Utah. The area has a population of Native Americans and Europeans. It is also known for its influence of the Mormon Church. However, the Civil War has played a big role in its history.
Native American population
When European settlers began to settle in the United States, Native Americans were forced onto reservations. These lands were established to keep them isolated from whites. They were also given a yearly stipend that included food, money, and household goods. Many American Indian bands were not able to survive the military defeats that followed.
After the Civil War, the government decided to change its policy towards Native American tribes. It passed laws that discouraged their way of life. The federal government also drove them off of their lands. For this reason, the population of American Indians was reduced to a few hundred thousand by the turn of the century.
In the early nineteenth century, the United States continued to expand westward. This expansion was accompanied by the discovery of gold, which presented new opportunities for settlers. However, the indigenous people’s numbers dropped significantly due to the wars and diseases brought on by the settlers.
By the end of the nineteenth century, nearly all Native American tribes were living on the western coast. These groups were forced to make the choice between living in a reservation or assimilating to American culture. While many American Indian bands were able to remain culturally intact, others did not.
During the first half of the twentieth century, the motion picture industry gave Kanab a needed economic boost. Hundreds of movies have been filmed in the city since the 1920s.
Several American Indian tribes still exist today. Currently, there are 566 federally recognized Indian tribes in the U.S. They include the Hualapai, the Navajo, the Choctaw, and the Cherokee. Each of these sovereign Indian nations has its own language, culture, and government.
Today, there are six Indigenous representatives in the House of Representatives. Three of these are from the states of Hawaii, New Mexico, and Alaska. Another two are from the states of Texas and North Carolina. One of these, Markwayne Mullin, has recently vacated his seat to run for the Senate.
Since the start of the twenty-first century, the number of American Indians and Alaska Natives has grown. However, there are still threats from the federal and state governments.
Mormon influence
Mormons were not happy with the rapid expansion of economic power in the Rocky Mountain stronghold. They were interested in establishing settlement outposts on their route to California and Arizona.
As part of its missionary efforts, the church wanted to establish areas suitable for agriculture. In the early 1860s, several towns were settled. One such town was Kanab. Initially, the people wished to own land in their own names. However, the public lands in the area were disintegrated.
A solution was offered by Brigham Young. He sent a letter to the brethren in Kanab. The letter was ambiguous. Nevertheless, the Kanab people unanimously approved entry into the United Order.
Brigham Young’s solution omitted several important facts. For instance, he neglected to record the vote count. And, his solution had seeds for failure.
After a year in the newly established Kanab, the order began to fall apart. A dissatisfied president and bishop were removed from the leadership. This resulted in a faction of the order, known as the “United Order,” remaining intact.
Communal living was also attempted at the Order at Kanab. This experiment was much more successful than other attempts at communal living in the Utah Territory.
At the time, the most advanced concept of communal living in the Utah Territory was the cooperative movement. Although the cooperative movement was not a major element of the United Order in Kanab, it was a precursor.
The Kanab Order’s success was based on its overtone of stewardship. The town was populated with families whose ideas about division of labor differed. Each family received at least one lot. These lots were used to build houses and barns.
Levi Stewart, a resident of Big Cottonwood, arrived in Kanab in June of 1870. He struggled to make ends meet for three years. Eventually, he died from an apparent heart attack. Among other things, he provided a connection between Kanab’s turbulent past and present.
During his tenure as president, President John Taylor called Leonard John Nuttall back to Salt Lake City to help untangle church property from the estate of Brigham Young. Nuttall became private secretary for the new president.
Civil war
The Civil War was one of the most important events in the nineteenth century. Most of the fighting took place in southern states. However, the war also had an impact on the north.
Many people in the North believed that slavery was wrong. Others wanted it outlawed. And there were those who argued that the federal government was taking away their rights. There were political and cultural differences between the North and the South that contributed to the war.
One of the most threatening acts was the raid by John Brown and 19 supporters in 1859 at the federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. They tried to confiscate weapons. But they were defeated by the Federal army.
The Civil War was the last confrontation of the series over slavery. During the war, Kansas and Nebraska joined the Union as free states. It also brought about a new set of challenges to the territorial limits on slavery agreed upon by the southern states. These new states shifted power between the North and the South.
Another important element of the war was the expansion of the American West. The Confederacy secretly established a base in Canada. This led to a large market for Canadian goods. The war also helped maritime shipbuilders prosper. For instance, Benjamin Wier, a Halifax merchant, provided ship repair facilities in Halifax. He became an agent for Confederate blockade runners.
Adding the Far West into a Civil War unit helps students to understand how the conflict affected the country. This can be done through a range of approaches. Some are more military focused than others.
In addition, adding the western history of the Confederacy to a Civil War unit helps students understand the national impact of the war. The conflict is the most tragic event in United States history. As such, it is a fitting anniversary.
Although the Civil War has been viewed as a relatively minor event, the western expansion of the American West had a significant impact on the nation. Historians are now beginning to articulate a new way of thinking about the Civil War and the Western together.
