The Loran Scholars program is designed for high school students who want to become doctors. This program helps them develop their academic and leadership skills. They are encouraged to work with a mentor who is knowledgeable about the science and health fields. They also have the chance to learn about the history of medicine in the United States.
Loran Scholars
The Loran Scholars Foundation is a national charitable organization that awards university scholarships to deserving Canadian students. It is the country’s second largest undergraduate merit award, and students are selected based on their leadership, service, and character qualities. Students are chosen annually to receive a scholarship worth up to $15,000.
This year, more than 6,000 students applied to be a Loran Scholar, and 72 finalists were chosen. In announcing the winners, the Loran Scholars Foundation is recognizing the accomplishments of the incoming class of 2021. This year’s recipients include Vincent Wong, a Vancouver resident, Younseo Heo, a Saint John, N.L., and Chidi Okarah, a Surrey, British Columbia native.
The Loran Scholars Foundation supports students who have an unconventional path in life while making positive contributions to society. Since 1988, the foundation has given out over $50 million in awards. Since that time, over 2,500 students have been recognized, including Superior-Greenstone District School Board student Avery Grouette-McDougall. As part of the National Selections, candidates from all over Canada may apply to be a Loran Scholar.
The Loran Scholars Foundation has a rigorous selection process that looks for qualities that can’t be shown on a transcript. They invest in these students, allowing them to reach their full potential on a Canadian university campus. The criteria for selection are based on character, leadership promise, and service. The program also provides one-on-one mentoring to help students achieve their academic and professional goals.
The Loran Scholarship Foundation has received nearly 5,200 applications across Canada. After analyzing the candidates’ applications, the organization will select up to 88 finalists. Interviews will take place in Toronto on January 31st and February 1st, 2020. Once the interviews are complete, the Foundation will announce the names of up to 36 Loran Scholars and will award $5,000 to each finalist.
